Ruby

Information About Ruby:

This is the red variety of the CORUNDUM family of gemstones. All other colors of corundum are called sapphire.

The red color of the stone is usually caused by Chromic oxide and/or titanium oxide.

Most rubies are mined in Burma and Thailand. The Thai specimens tend to lean toward more of a pink hue.

Lab-created rubies are becoming increasingly popular.

Because of its hardness, rubies are often used as bearings in fine wristwatches.

SHAPES FOR CUTTING: Suitable for faceting to any shape. Generally only low-grade specimens are ever cut as a cabochon.
